Prevalence of antibiotic resistant E. coli in some environmental sources polluted with wastewater

Abstract

The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria presents a major threat to public health because it reduces the effectiveness of antimicrobial treatment, leading to increased, morbidity, mortality and healthcare expenditure. Pollution of irrigated water by wastewater plays an important role in dissemination of pathogens among soil and plants, which become new source for antibiotic-resistant bacteria to humans, animals and the environment. The current study focused on the antibiotic resistant E. coli as one of the most important coliform bacteria, which could reach the soil by irrigated water polluted with wastewater. A total of 1.051 x106Gram negative bacterial isolates, only 1 x105 (9.5%) of them were identified as E. coli strains. The maximum total number of E. coli strains were isolated from soil polluted with wastewater (SPW) samples, which reached to 3.8 x104 (18.5%) cfu/g followed by water polluted with wastewater (WPW); spinach irrigated with water polluted with wastewater (SPPW); lettuce irrigated with water polluted with wastewater (LPW) and soil irrigated with ground water (SGW) samples, which attained to 3.2 x104 (12.1%), 1.2 x104 (6.5%), 1 x104 (19.3%) and 8 x 103 (6.7%) cfu/g or ml, respectively. All tested E. coli strains were resistant to ampicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid. Resistance of E. coli to aminoglycoside and doxycycline antibiotics was different according to the isolation source. In contrast, sensitivity of E. coli strains to ciprofloxacin was relatively high compared to other tested antibiotics. The maximum percentage of multiple antibiotic resistant E. coli was detected in WPW followed by SPPW, LPW and SPW. Key words: Resistant, E. coli, antibiotics,wastewater, pollution, lettuce, spinach
