Pharmacological and Phytochemical Portrayal of Monocotyledonous Medicinal Plants of Jammu and Kashmir abound with Antidiabetic Potential

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (or diabetes) is a chronic, permanent state that affects human body's capability to utilize the food energy due to inability of pancreas to produce enough insulin which is required for the body to proficiently use sugars, fats and proteins. There are about 13 plant species along with their active chemical constituents described in this review representing 12 genera and 05 families of monocotyledonous angiosperms of Jammu and Kashmir (India) which reveal the significance of herbal plants in the management of the dreaded disorder of Diabetes mellitus. Key Words: Diabetes mellitus, Monocotyledonous medicinal plants, Antidiabetic property, Jammu and Kashmir
